Artist Statement

My paintings are products of investigations into subjects and ideas that interest me, whether that be of personal significance or a broader, shared experience. Since I was a young child, I've been fascinated by the female figure: the wide range of sinuating lines and bulging forms, the rich and diverse history, the vastly different interpretations.

My most recent works are manifestations of the human condition, primarily female. I am interested in the biological as well as the metaphorical flow and fluidity of the female figure and how this is perceived by universal belief systems; specifically how it distorts one's perspective of the sexually charged female nude. By emphasizing the openness of the female form, I hope to translate the immediacy and uncontrolled nature of the human condition from the female perspective. The ambiguity of the figures, whether they exist in isolation, with others, or in a self-reflective repetitious cycle, speaks to the common experience of one's image being vulnerable to distortion by the public; the inability to control what others perceive from an image and the tension that exists between the sexualization and the repulsion of the female figure. The assertive centrality of these figures is meant to challenge the viewer to contemplate his or her reaction to the subject whether that be instances of eroticism, aversion, disgust or sympathy.
