Artist Statement
I make art to draw people in to a place between reality and artificiality to encourage self- reflection as well as reflection upon culturally accepted contradictions and human suffering.
I am interested in humanity; the sensual physicality of our flesh, especially the tension that exists between the sexualization and the repulsion of the human body derived from constructed cultural belief systems. That tension is also prevalent in the formal elements of my paintings. The picture plane is interrupted by application of paint so that the viewer is constantly drawn away from the illusion of ‘space/human form’, toward the surface of the painting itself and is forced to address the image as contrived and purposeful. My intention is to capture the anxiety between the physicality of the paint and the emotions that resonate from the illusion of reality.
My process involves maintaining an archive of source imagery to inspire my paintings. Each painting begins from a collection of photographs or objects that create the particular mood that I am trying to convey. In this way my paintings are based on not just situations that occur in our culture, but specific people’s record of those situations. So in essence, the subjects of my paintings have been deemed worthy of publishing or recording. They represent instances that do not want to be lost, which makes them inherently meaningful.
